3 Rules to Follow when Taking a Sauna Bath


People love to take sauna baths because they have a lot to benefit from them, especially when it comes to major improvements in their overall health, but to benefit from using the sauna bath you have to use it properly. Whether you are using a traditional Finnish sauna or a top-rated infrared sauna, there are a couple of rules you need to follow in order to reap the benefits of a sauna bath. Therefore, if you want to bask in the sauna bath but you want to know that you are using it the correct way, read the following lines to find out the 3 rules that you must follow for a safe and pleasant experience.

1. Take a shower before entering the sauna, not after

You should always take a shower before entering the sauna, or else all the bacteria that lies on your skin will reproduce quickly in the sauna bath, and instead of eliminating the toxins from your body in the sauna session as you normally would, you’re just spreading more bacteria on your skin. Therefore, never forget to take a shower and dry well before entering the sauna, this being a rule to follow at all times.

A mistake that many people unfortunately make is to take a cold shower after getting out of the sauna, and while taking the shower after getting out might have some pleasant and beneficial effects for the tension you feel in your muscles, further soothing it, it’s quite dangerous because you undergo your body through a hypothermic shock, and not everyone will react the same to that shock when the cold water hits the surface of the hot skin.

2. Have a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated

When you use the sauna bath, you lose a lot of water from your body through excessive sweating, therefore you have to enter the sauna with a bottle of water to make sure that you stay properly hydrated.

Dehydration can lead to a lot of health problems, and it’s easy to get dehydrated when using the sauna bath, therefore make sure to not take this rule lightly if you want to benefit from the experience of using the sauna instead of getting to feel all the negative effects of using the sauna improperly.

3. Don’t stay in the sauna for a longer time than your body can handle

Many people stay in saunas for a lot more time than their body can handle, sitting in it for 1-2 hours even if it gets unbearable for them to breathe and they feel like their skin is on fire, and all because they think that the more they sit in it, the more they’ll have to benefit from it. But this is false, and the perfect amount of time that you should spend in the sauna bath is a maximum of 30 minutes to not produce any harm to your breathing canals and skin.

If you feel like you can truly handle more than the recommended time of 30 minutes to sit in the sauna bath, at least make sure to get out of it as soon as you start feeling any discomfort when you breathe, or when your skin gets hot.
